  • Boy, I’m real hesitant to go to HR. May as well ask to be fired.

It really depends on the business, culture, climate. The better places I’ve worked, this kind of interest is genuine, an attempt to foster better relationships at work. Of course, some people are just nosey Nellies…

Without knowing the environment and culture (and the questions), it’s hard to say what to do.

Best I can say is to make it clear you like to keep your work and private life well separated.

Also OP, if someone else feels insulted, that’s on them. They’ve chosen to feel insulted. Besides, how do you know she feels insulted? If she’s communicating that, then she’s being manipulative, using “emotional blackmail”. Look, I’m not responsible for how you choose to feel, that’s on you.

One trick I’ve used with people who continue with questions is to respond with a non-sequiter, something jarring, and use it all the time, repeatedly. Something like “how about the weather”, or “how about those <insert local sports team>”. Make it your catch phrase for when people continue to pry, and don’t be afraid to repeat it. Keep in mind tone matters, so say it like you mean it, like you walked in on Monday after a team did well, or got their asses beat. You don’t even have to like the sport or the team, in fact it’s kind of funny if you don’t like them.

It’s a bit of re-framing the conversation, while also communicating you aren’t interested in the subject, without being an ass. And if anyone complains, well, you were just talking about a sports team.

  • Check the Lineage website first, they may show up there. It’s a good, easy start, though not definitive.

If you can unlock the bootloader, it can most likely be rooted (I’ve never had a phone with an unlock able bootloader that I couldn’t root).

Rooting today us largely done with Magisk. The sequence is:

Extract the boot image from a rom (I’ve always done it with a rom zip I’ve downloaded, usually Lineage or Divest). So this will be dependent on ability to get the boot partition image (not sure if it can be extracted from the phone, I would think there’s a way).

Copy the boot image to the phone along with Magisk. Install Magisk, use it to patch the boot image.

Copy boot image back to PC, flash the boot image to phone. Now it’s rooted.

Run Magisk and configure root options.

Check xdadevelopers.com for latest info on Magisk, I believe it’s pretty well documented there.

Edit: If any of them are Verizon phones, it’s less likely to be rootable, though I’ve found the Vzw Moto’s tend to be unlockable.

    Funny someone downvoted you.

Clearly that person has never managed a 10,000 pc domain. Or hell, even a 10 pc domain in an SMB.

“The license is worth the cost” - I literally had this conversation with a peer not two hours ago. They have a client who’s previous IT management built a domain using Linux. Yes, you can do it, but I’d only do it if your IT is fully in-house and stable. This was an IT vendor. It saved them (the client) licensing…like $250 or so.

Imagine how quickly they’re going to burn $250 for a support issue because there’s something odd about how the Linux software isn’t exactly duplicating a windows DC? Or the next IT vendor doesn’t know what you implemented, so have to find out about which packages you used and how they work. (In this case they’re building a new domain and migrating everyone, because it’s currently unsupportable. Glad they saved $250 to spend $20k today).

You don’t use Linux desktop in a business to save licensing costs, unless you know the use-case inside and out. The first time your business has a need for something that doesn’t exist in Linux land, all those savings are gone as you build a virtual host for Windows, and deal with the lost productivity.

And I use Linux every day for things like Proxmox, UnRAID, TrueNAS, etc. Even there the difference between design approaches is really problematic.

  • This is the best description I’ve seen.

It gets old hearing the “Linux is better, Windows sucks” mantra.

They’re different things with different use cases.

I despise Linux for a desktop, it’s an awful experience, because it hasn’t been developed/targeted for what I need to do, and I don’t have the time to play fuck-fuck with distros to work something out - I have other shit to do.

Like build and manage Proxmox/TrueNAS boxes, which are… LINUX! Because this is where Linux shines, as purpose-built solutions.
