  • Toxic work culture also means dishonest management expectations, wage theft, and generally anti-employee policies.

For example, around 2-3 years ago I heard a fun story about why my old employer lost 3/4 of their IT team(MSP, their product was IT folks). The straw that broke the camel’s back was a management partner asking an employee “are you letting your family get in the way of your job?” This was because they couldn’t get this person to work overtime on the spot because they weren’t going to leave their kid’s sports game.

At that same employer, about 7 years ago, I was told I would have to start my day at the customer’s job site at or before 8AM, and I wouldn’t be compensated for my travel time because “everyone has a commute, buddy”. Problem was, my customers were often over an hour away, and they were going to bill the customer for my travel time anyway.

There’s certainly still toxic work cultures, and while I am glad you seemingly haven’t had to experience it as much recently, you shouldn’t discount other’s struggles just because you aren’t experiencing the same thing.

  • I’ll piggyback on this one. I’m personally more partial to Lenovo if money and lead time isn’t an issue, but Dell Latitude is the budget business brand. On site repair support is roughly the same, they contract 3rd parties in whatever area you are in to do onsite repair.

I can reliably get Latitude 5500 series laptops with i5, 16gb, 256gb, and fingerprint reader for less than $1000 shipped, and that includes a 5 year on-site accidental included warranty with keep your drive. You drove over your laptop? Ok, here’s a loaner, let me try to pull the storage, and try not to do it again.

  • Different hardware type. Gaming laptops have dedicated graphics cards which generate heat from an additional source, and they have to drive 1080p/1440p/4k content, whereas the steam deck is a 1280x800 screen, which is absolutely perfect for an AMD integrated GPU with reduced thermal management.

The steam deck is a single spec tightly tuned machine and software package not unlike a game console, whereas a gaming laptop is an all purpose machine with hardware all over the spectrum that you can buy what you want/need.

  • If you’re American, your credit score affects a whole lot more than your creditworthiness. A bad, or even not as good score can affect your chances at getting a job, getting a place to live, and more commonly, how much you pay for car insurance.

We give a lot of shit to China over their social credit score, but we’ve had ours for years, we just pretend it’s only for creditworthiness. When your job does pre employment checks, they can also do a credit check. Many apartment complexes do the same. Hell, even utility companies can check your credit and decide you are a risk and ratchet up your deposit.

It’s not a guarantee that anyone does this, but it is a possibility. Be on your best behavior, citizen, the credit bureaus are watching.
