It’s called a pseudopupil. It’s the part of the compound eye that’s collinear with your line of sight. As you said, the light is absorbed there and registered by the dragonfly. The surface of the rest of the eye is at an angle and reflects light from the surrounding, which makes it look brighter.

501·5 months agoThis is worse than Pompeii. The ancient Roman city wasn’t buried under lava, but under ash, rock and boulders. While that is still very deadly, it isn’t nearly as destructive as lava. That’s why we can still experience Pompeii architecture, art and culture. Excavating this road, covered in solidified lava, is extremely difficult and costly. Just go over it, once it’s cooled.

2·11 months agoAndroid is an OS. Do you want iOS in a virtual machine within Android? Intriguing idea. Use Android for most things, and iOS for the few things out does better.

This is one of the most underrated abilities. I advice everyone to do this:
Pick a bird that is common in your country or other areas you visit. Learn it’s song. Soon you’ll start to hear it everywhere and begin noticing variations around different locations. I did this with the chaffinch.
It’s really funny to hear their dialects. Now, I’m definitely not skilled enough to pinpoint a bird based on its accent. But I do notice differences and it is thorough enjoyable, every time.
