This is another of those “things that I would like but are pretty unrealistic.” If the goal is to cut down on beef, the price would either go up drastically or we’d put farmers into something less lucrative and just import our beef.

Regardless, the public, of whom many if not most eat beef, would be furious. I struggle to see a government that could pass this and last an election without having this overturned by the next government rather quickly.

That being said, it’d be nice. But nice in the same way that everyone being vegetarian and not wearing sweatshop clothes would be nice.

That’s a pretty bold leap. I’m pretty confident the guy screaming removed**removed on the street has bigger problems than the lack of free transit. (Also, if you’ve ever take a skytrain you’ll notice how payment is rather optional for most folks with issues.)

Tourists bring in a boatload of money. I’m not even sure how you would enact a mechanism like this… A BC toll taker at every port, airport and land crossing? How much are we charging to pay for that, that somehow doesn’t hurt tourism industries but also completely subsidizes our use of public transit?

I love public transit, think it’s important but this seems more one of those “things I would like but don’t seem particularly feasible.”

(Also, if you’ve ever been on the N20 or even BLine and watched a mentally unhinged man threatening women, children, non white people or other vulnerable people, well… Not wildly sure I want to drop the barrier to entry to zero. I can be a scary looking dude and have had to use that at least 3 times in the last year as someone experiencing mental issues went off on a quiet brown guy, a woman and some teens respectively.)

I love catching games with friends in a crowd of strangers. Dozens of folks who don’t know each other mostly watching and yelling for the same team, just lovely.

This is fucking silly. Yeah, in the short term this works out. But loom to other ridiculous markets like NYC which are still trying to recover from similar.

Expand housing supply, don’t fucking restrictions the few ridiculous operations trying to make said supply!

Anything that makes housing affordable would also remove a significant amount of wealth from the elderly, who outvote and (I think) out donate other demographic groups.

Pretty hard thing to do politically.

I dunno, I think especially in older generations, the earnest conversation is something to be avoided at all costs. For my dad, that’s just how he was raised and I think his worst nightmare would be talking about feelings or something.

So take that and then put a hobby/passion that clearly means a lot to your folks and yeah, those can really combine in unfortunate ways.

Personally, when we’re not talking politics (my parents’ version of sports) I will sometimes throw more serious or interesting questions at mom (as said, dad hates that so I don’t push) and sometimes get interesting answers. It’s effort and mostly a one way street but I try to remember they’re not from a super healthy emotional era and even if they might at times be open to it, it does not come naturally to them (or me if I’m being honest.)

Forgot a lighter which has so far led to 2 weddings and 5 kids?

In the first week of school, a buddy and I wandered around with beer and joints to various dorms but forgot a lighter. Asking around for one, we made a new friend. Fast forward a couple years, “new friend” let me know about a home for rent opening up. I rounded up some folks (including original buddy) and we rented it. Except one guy was gone for the summer. So, a gal came from out of town to live with there. We became friends, she fell in love and ended up moving here. Between her, her best friend and sister they’ve had 5 kids with partners mostly from that original friend circle.

So, if I had remembered a lighter way back in first year, we wouldn’t have put a house of folks together, wouldn’t have met gal and her pals and thus a few weddings and kids would’ve happened differently or not at all.

I’m not understanding what premise you’re rejecting.

Are you okay with the lawyers having additional security as long as they don’t move the court? Even though a few years of paying for that security would probably cost more than repurposing a different building would?

I asked a hypothetical question you silly Billy, feel free to answer it.

Or to be honest and just say “hey, if people who make more money get hospitalized, boo hoo to them.” (Even though globally, we’re probably in the 1% of wealth etc but pesky reality don’t matter none.)

Edit: Alternatively, how about you be a woman in a nice business suit walking alone through Main and Hastings after dark and after a day of defending the poor in court? Do that a few dozen times and let me know how safe you feel. (Don’t worry, if anything does happen, I will have a sympathetic “oh noes” for you too!)

So, say someone were hospitalized after being attacked for being gay and the gay community asked the city to step up and increase community safety, would you also think it’s pretty gross the lgbtq community thought they were special as opposed to the rest of the plebs?

Your response to someone being hospitalized for going to work is “Oh noes” ? That’s pretty gross.

But a capitalism where workers’ wages/suffering etc were included in how people considered the price would also be lovely. (Ie, people actually get upset about sweatshop labour so the price of sweatshop goods increases yo offset that disgust) would also be lovely.

There’s a huge gap between theory/hope and reality.
