For weird shaped waves like this you can also visit Lake Erie any time of year. Shallows and shore shape and wind combine and you get some absolutely wild waves.

Yeah, coming in with no prior CAD experience I actually think freecad’s interface makes sense, especially since I’ve used it for both 3d printing (one workbench) and mocking up building plans (a different lumber one I was able to download as an add-on - very cool).

I think the key is not good at shipping compared to themselves in the past. Same with Google.

They’re still better than the alternatives, but they’ve gotten much worse in quality all around, and they squeezed out competitors years ago so there’s no viable alternatives that aren’t WAY worse.

I can’t remember what channel, but somebody did an experiment with not doing the ridiculous thumbnails and got way fewer views. Which sort of gets at the point of this article: the are huge swaths of people that are clicking on them and that sounds super foreign to a lot of us.

Yeah, I’m not saying Libre office isn’t…fine, or that development tools on Linux aren’t good or even better. But the idea that all Microsoft software sucks is as demonstrably false as an opinion statement can be. They’re really good, and with Office the alternatives aren’t close. Do most people need all the functionality in Excel or PowerPoint? No, but they’re great pieces of software and ignoring that is just plain tribalism.

Let’s not get carried away. Office suite (particularly Word, PowerPoint and Excel) is some of the best software I’ve used. Crazy powerful, easy to use, consistent across iterations. Outlook could have some QOL things but it’s still better than Thunderbird. VS Code is awesome too.

They used to be good. They were cheap, you could flash them with custom firmware, they were very need friendly. They just gradually got worse and worse though, starting with them wanting to keep you in their app. It’s always garbage profit seeking. No one is happy being good to consumers if they can make more money not doing so.

That’s not a conspiracy theory that’s like entry level MBA stuff.

People still used the hell out of it up until the pandemic, despite having a terrible two track design, despite having delayed maintenance for essentially 30 years, and despite having three jurisdictions arguing over how to fund what is truthfully only a commuter rail, not a proper full system.

I’d love to see more investment in Metro, but there needs to be a seismic shift in how we think about it, because commuting is only going to continue to decline in the long term, even if it will bounce a bit in the short term. I’m hoping DC can find a way to incentivize development around metro stops to make metro better for locals rather than M-Fers that the Post keeps insisting are responsible for subsidizing the city through lunches and happy hours. That includes repurposing half empty office buildings, and maybe looking at relaxing the height restriction as you get further out of the city center.

If anything, a bunch of laughing face emojis makes me feel like I’m on an old school forum, or a newer one on a topic that skews graybeard, like woodworking or working on old Chevys.
